I mean solar panels for turning sunlight into your own electricity.

In places with good insolation and particularly that also have high electricity rates, it is a good investment.

And at today's low costs for high quality mass produced solar modules warranteed for 25 years it is an incredibly foolish undertaking.  When your house burns down due to corroded or initially bad electrical connections, watch your insurance company decline the claim.

Do the math:   Using commercial modules, inverter and mounting materials,  DIY is about $1.60/W of which $0.60 - $0.65 is the PV modules.  Making the modules oneself can reduce the cost only by $0.20 - $0.25 unless using reject cells.  If someone can't afford the $0.20 - $0.25 difference between DIY modules and commercial modules then they can't afford the other $1.00 in the inverter and BOS.

you can make your own Pb/PbO2 storage bats and own inverters too but ok most don't know how to do this and its not for amateurs.I've seen remarkable power come from some home-made photoelectrochemical systems and they are not particulary sensitive to the direction of sunshine like the solid-states silicons are.photo-electrochemical is going to become big in future vs silicon.

LOL there are people here freaking out over 0.5ug of methyl mercury in certain vaccines and you are suggesting people play with making their own lead batteries.  Will you send them lead citrate treats to gnaw on as they toil?

Send them here to africa mark E.that'l toughen them up a bit and divert from their worrying about their nails.I once ingested about 10milligram HgCl2 just to see what effects it would have on my body..a bit of nausea some heavy diarreah and by next day all symptoms gone.was rather curious

Solar pv panels are great but not efficient. We need to invent some amplification technic allowing us to use only single 250W solar panel for all our needs  ;D  Isn't that the purpose we discuss here ?  :P

That's sort of what solar concentrators do.  The trouble is that at today's prices, if you have the space, it costs less to put up 4kW nameplate of modules, than it does to concentrate  20 sq m aperture 16:1 onto one module's worth of cells.
